IM电竞足球, congratulates Ellidy Pullin on the recent arrival of her baby Minnie Alex Pullin, made possible with the help of IM电竞足球, Gold Coast Medical Director Dr Andrew Davidson , our team of experienced scientists and the posthumous sperm retrieval procedure after the sudden passing of her partner and Olympian Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin in July last year.
How was this miracle possible?
The lightbulb moment that helped deliver this miracle baby in the face of adversity, came from one of Ellidy’s friends who had heard of posthumous sperm retrieval and set the wheels in motion to see if Ellidy wanted to go down this path.
Despite grappling with her grief, Ellidy immediately agreed and Dr Davidson informed them of the legal steps they needed to quickly take for it to be possible.
Time was of the essence for this procedure, which must be done as soon as practically possible, ideally within 36 hours.
Posthumous sperm retrieval is not only for those who have died but also for the chronically and terminally ill, and it is estimated that live sperm can be retrieved, in the majority of cases, in about 80 per cent of cases.
The procedure
There is a well-documented process to follow in order for posthumous sperm retrieval to occur.
It is a time-critical and complex process and requirements can vary from state to state.
Essentially it involves: consent from the coroner (if required); consent from the deceased’s next-of-kin; proof of intending to have children is also usually required and finally consent from the hospital where the deceased person is.
There is no doubt it can be a very stressful situation.
What are the next steps?
Our team of experts are trained to guide you through the process. If the sperm retrieval is successful, it is then frozen for future use in IVF treatment.
Dr Davidson said in his 40-year career, he hadn’t previously undertaken posthumous sperm retrieval but has since been asked to do it again on two more occasions.
As a fertility doctor, he said he sees patients faced with adversity every day, and it is always gratifying to be able to find a solution for them and help them achieve their dream of a baby.
