Dr Antony Lighten is passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes for his patients through the most advanced and up-to-date science.
Dr Lighten works primarily in:

Dr Lighten specialises in all aspects of fertility treatments including IVF & fertility surgery. He has almost 30 years of experience in treating patients in fertility clinics in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. He is doubly qualified as both a medical doctor and a science PhD. With a strong science background, Dr Lighten bases all his treatments on the most up to date scientific evidence.
Originally, from the United Kingdom, Dr Lighten graduated from Cambridge University Medical School and gained a PhD at Imperial College in London. He completed his specialist training in London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Further studies at the Oxford University Fertility Unit led to him completing UK sub-specialist training in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery (CCSST).
His first post as a fertility doctor was working for Prof. Lord Robert Winston at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. At that time, Lord Winston was the UK’s pre-eminent Fertility Specialist and his research team led by Prof. Alan Handyside had just become the first in the world to perform Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Dr Lighten became Lord Winston’s Research Fellow. His research, although rather esoteric 20 years ago, has become highly relevant. Dr Lighten was the first scientist to demonstrate genomic imprinting in human embryos. Disruption of this imprinting process by IVF culture is now much studied and is known to be the cause of rare genetic conditions that can cause overgrowth syndromes and cancers.
Dr Lighten is also an experienced fertility surgeon specialising in complex surgical procedures, which improve the chance of both spontaneous pregnancy and pregnancy after IVF. He performs fertility operations such as advanced laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, hysteroscopic surgery for intra-uterine problems at Northwest Private Hospital.
Outside of medicine, Dr Lighten enjoys ski touring and cycling. He represented Great Britain at the Junior World Rowing Championship. He also represented the University of London and Cambridge University (Reserve Goldie Crew) at Rowing. He was a reservist medical officer in the British Army for 12 years, serving with the Parachute Regiment. Dr Lighten also worked as a Management Consultant for McKinsey and Co during a break from medical practice.

- I grew up in … Chester in the North West of England. Chester is a historical city dating back to Roman times and sits on the border with Wales and the mountains beyond.
- When I am not working …I enjoy spending time with my family and enjoying the great outdoors.
- I wish I could … find more time in the day. There is never enough time to get everything done.
- Most people don’t know that … I used to be a Doctor in the British Army Reserves. I was also a keen Rower at school and university .
- My favourite holiday spot is … the UK. I return every year to catch up with old friends and reconnect with my past.
- When I was growing up, I wanted to be … I always wanted to be a doctor. At school, we had to paint a portrait of ourselves in 20 years’ time. I painted myself performing abdominal surgery.
- My greatest achievement is … having my baby daughter Kit. Being a fertility specialist with fertility problems was a humbling experience.
- The one person I would have liked to have met is… Winston Churchill. I am slowly working through his various histories and the more I read the more fascinated I become.
- The best advice my parents gave me was … don’t go parachuting. I obviously ignored it and served for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment in the UK.
